Neighbours to clash
TERENGGANU begin the defence of their Malaysia Games football title with a mouth-watering Group C clash against neighbours Kelantan at the SM Seri Kota field in Malacca today.
As hosts in 2008, Terengganu romped to gold two years ago with a 5-1 demolishment of Perlis in the final, largely due to the form of Ashaari Shamsuddin and Manaf Mamat.
Both will be missing this time however for different reasons but the defending champions have been strengthened by the inclusion of six Super League players from the state team and club side Kuala Terengganu T-Team.
Sarawak-born Joseph Kalang Tie will front the Terengganu strikeforce alongside Firdaus Faudzi while Kelantan will not be short on talent either in the shape of Super League forward Nizad Auyb and President's Cup duo Ramzul Zahini Adenan and Ailim Fahmi.
Unlike past editions, the hosts do not start as favourites even as Malacca will field their entire Premier League team.
Malacca open against Sarawak in the night match but having struggled near the bottom of the Premier League, it would be an achievement if they can reach the quarter-finals from Group D which also included Selangor and Sabah.
Group A appears to bear the 'Group of Death' tag with any one of the four teams -- Perlis, Perak, Kedah and Federal Territories -- capable of qualifying for the quarter-finals.
Perlis, as runners-up in 2008, start as favourites while there will be a grudge match between FT and Kedah, who knocked the former out two years ago at the last eight stage in extra-time.
The FA of Malaysia's ruling barring national senior and youth players from the Games has made the Under-23 tournament one of the most open in years.
There are many unknown qualities assembled in Malacca with most teams forced to rely mostly on players from their youth squads and state leagues.
